Review: Darling – Rachel Edwards

The story is about Darling, a Jamaican single parent of a young son named Stevie who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. She meets and quickly marries a man named Thomas who has a daughter named Lola.

From the start, Lola and Darling have a terrible conflict that leads to disaster and could be why the publishers went with the “psychological thriller” label, but for me, the story fails at that and falls flat.

In the beginning, the author talks about Brexit, and it doesn’t fit. Then she switches back and forth with Lola and Darling’s point of view that was not fluid, and it bogged down the story. On top of that, Lola’s friends were a white supremacist, and yet we are to believe she is not a racist while giving Darling hell. None of the characters had me vested, no twists or turns and frankly I am not sure why this was a thriller because it fell short in execution.
