Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough
To be perfectly honest, I didn’t read the synopsis to this book. The cover was the first thing that caught my attention. The second thing that caught my attention was the blurbs from a few of my favorite authors. The third and final thing that caught my attention before reading this book was the WTF hashtag. I would love to pause for a second and give a round of applause to the marketing team.
The #WTFthatending hashtag would pique any reader’s interest. So I was happy when my friends at the publishing company sent me a review copy. I’m going to try my best to write a review without giving away the ending, but I don’t think I could do that even if I tried. Ok! Enough of the rambling on to the review.
After a night of drinking and kissing a random guy, Louise is ready to start the work week with putting the events of that night behind her. So much for leaving things in the past, she finds out her new boss is the guy she kissed in the bar. If that’s not embarrassing enough – she finds out he is married. Once the shock wears off, David & Louise agrees to remain professional.
Then one day Louise bumps into a stranger while she is out running errands. After the awkward introductions, Louise discovers her new friend Adele is David’s wife. The three of them are involved in tangled web, but who’s the one pulling strings.
Let me stop right here…
This book could have gone in so many directions, but the author decided to reveal a lot of the clues at the beginning. Since I’m a big fan of the suspense/mystery genre – I was piecing together the puzzle pieces with ease.
I kept thinking to myself – “Get to the ending… What else can you reveal?!”
Then all of a sudden the story jumps the shark.
The author does an excellent job of getting the readers invested in the characters. Even when parts of the story dragged – I still wanted to know what would happen next. What I don’t understand is why did the story change genres out of the blue. One minute I was able to the relate to the characters and then next minute I was completely lost.
If you decide to read this book – Avoid listening to the audiobook unless you have 11 hours to invest. I could have read this book in a few hours if I didn’t alternate between the book and audiobook.
Will I give this author another chance? Absolutely but if she jumps the shark again – I won’t invest my time again.
