The Color of Law by Mark Gimenez
5 Stars

A partner at a prominent law firm is forced to choose between his enviable lifestyle and doing the right thing. Former college football star Scott Fenney has worked his way to the top of the heap at the Dallas firm of Ford Stevens. But when Clark McCall, the wayward son of a Texas politician, gets himself murdered after a night of booze, drugs, and rough sex, Scott is assigned to defend the prime suspect, a heroine-addicted hooker named Shawanda Jones. The powers that be want her convicted—and Scott’s future at the firm may depend on it. But unfortunately for Scott, Shwanada claims she’s innocent, and he believes her.

Scott Finney is living the good life as a partner at Ford Stevens, a business law firm located in Dallas, TX. He drives a red Ferrari, married to a beautiful woman and has a daughter named after a character in ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ that he loves more than anything. Scott is also a well-known football star from his days back in college. Scott came from humble beginnings, so his climb to the top wasn’t an easy one, but working for law firm whose clients bring in millions of dollars at times makes him forget where he came from.

When a judge asks him to take on a case for the defendant in a murdered Texas politician’s son, Clark McCall, Scott is stunned because he has never dealt with a murder case before. He was chosen because of the elegant speech he gave about wanting to be the type of lawyer that Atticus was in “To Kill A Mockingbird”. The judge knew that the defendant Shawanda Jones would need an excellent lawyer, one that cares about people because the politician is up to be the next president of the United States.

Scott is determined to pass this case off to someone more qualified than him. Not to mention his boss is adamant about him passing it off to someone else as well. It’s bad enough that Clark has a past with drugs and whispers of raping women that his father does not want to be brought up, but Scott’s client is a junkie and prostitute. The problem is his client Shawanda refuses to let him go as her lawyer. But there will come a time that his wish to be removed from this case may just come true, but at what cost? He will have to make a decision to either remain her lawyer or walk away. The problem is if he walks away, it just very well mean the capital punishment for his defendant and if he stays as her lawyer his life will be hell.

Color of Law by Mark Gimenez was an excellent novel. This is a novel that had me laughing out loud from the humor laced throughout. This novel is about a black prostitute being charged with a crime she says she didn’t commit. Mainly because of her profession and the fact that she is on drugs, makes for a dilemma to fight or flight for this one human being who doesn’t even seem to care about herself. It is a novel that has realistic characters that the reader can easily get attached to. After reading this novel, I plan to read more by this author.
