Maya Stern, a former Army Captain is at the cemetery when we meet her, burying her husband Joe, who was murdered right in front of her. Maya is also feeling like because of her military background, she could have done more to save her husband, and that affects her deeply to the point as she tries to figure out why this happened, she discovers things about her husband’s family that cause her pause.
Shane, one of her platoon mates, is keeping an eye on Maya because that is what “brothers” do for each other. She wants to tell him she is being followed, for one thing, but not understanding the “why” of what is going on in her life right now, she also wants to protect him as he does for her.

This story has many layers, twists and turns that you expect with a Harlan Coben novel, and this one doesn’t disappoint. The story is tight, and I would read any work by this author because you know it is going to be a page turner.
