Review

Jason Mott has the ability to take real world problems and put a magical, mystic, supernatural spin on it. He opens, The Wonder of All Things with an air show tragedy in the small town of Stone Temple. I was completely drawn in from the first sentence, “For Once, Death took pity.”

It is the mercy in death, the mercy in Love and the mercy in Selflessness that drives this novel. From the tragedy, the town, and subsequently, the world, discover that 13-year old Ava can perform miraculous healings – unfortunately at a severe cost to her health.

What transpires next is a look at how selfish people expect self-less people to give until they can give no more. Mott allows us to see Ava’s gift through the eyes of her father, her deceased mother, her step-mother, her best-friend, Wash and Reverend Isaiah Brown. It was the mixture of Mott’s beautiful prose and the burning question of Ava’s out come that compelled me to finish this book. I did take exception to the actions that one of the antagonist took. I felt that something he did was out of his ability to do and that left me feeling a little bewildered. Other than that, fans of The Returned will not be disappointed by The Wonder of All Things and I will gladly see this when it is made into a movie.
