Candace thinks she has it all—a good job, a promising future, and a plan to get herself and her son out of the hood. But can she still make it happen when she gets involved with a young thug chasing street dreams?

Even with a good job, Candace is barely getting by, and raising her ten-year-old son is becoming more challenging by the day. Still, the quick-witted Candace has a plan. She’s focused on a big promotion with a healthy salary increase that will put her right where she needs to be.

Her strongest supporter is her buck-wild little sister Marci, who’s head over heels in love with a married man. Her other support comes from Prince, her son’s father, who is incarcerated but has her back no matter what. Still, not even the hustle she learned from him helps keep her straight on her paper chase.

Then she meets Chris—a pretty boy seven years her junior. Candace doesn’t know much about him, but his street-savvy swagger and seductive smile keep her heart racing. She should know better than to get involved with a man who’s tied to the streets, but Candace can’t bring herself to shake him off. And soon, Chris drags her down a road that threatens to end her career…and her life.

Review

Candace Reign is not your ordinary single mother, but as all mothers would be willing to. She will stop at nothing to make sure that her only child is well taken care of and out of harms way.

Robbins begins the story as being a coming of age story. During Candace’s teenage years, she becomes acquainted with her sons father Prince. Once she was involved completely with him her entire life as she knew it changed right before her eyes. Prince introduced her to a lavish lifestyle that she wasn’t use to being that her mother never had much. Candace’s father passed away, so it was just her and her younger sister Marcine who likes to be called Marci, and her mother. In the younger years, Candace found Prince’s street activities intriguing, but she didn’t see longevity in his lifestyle.

Princes trail of violence leads him straight into a jail cell leaving Candace to care for their infant son alone with the occasional help of her brother-in-law “Brother” Prince’s identical twin.

Candace is presented with an Administrative Job opportunity at her employer that would fix a lot of her money issues, and she planned to show her boss how she deserved the position through her impeccable work. There was just one problem standing in her way, and its name was Jennifer an arrogant, self-centered, privileged caucasian woman who made it her business to make Candace’s days of work uncomfortable for her twisted pleasure that was her runner-up. Who will win the big promotion Candace or Jennifer?

The author did an amazing job painting a vivid mental picture into the reader’s mind. Robbins created a page turner that will keep you on the edge eager to find out what will happen next! Be prepared for a suspense filled novel that can qualify as a coming of age novel.
