They met at the worst possible moment...or maybe it was just in time. David McClain was about to go to war and Lindsey Wood was there at his going-away party, capturing his heart when falling for a woman was the last thing on his mind. While David was serving his country, he stayed in close contact with Lindsey. But war changes a person, and when he came home very little had the same meaning that it had before – including the romance that had sustained him. Was love truly unconquerable, or would it prove to be just another battlefield casualty?

Review

David McClain is an Army Ranger, who has been deployed to Afghanistan for twelve months when he meets Lindsey Wood the day before he is about to leave. The connection between the two is undeniable, so they agree to keep in touch via email, letters, and Skype. Lindsey is David’s only bright spot during his dismal surroundings in Afghanistan. Lindsey begins to notice that David is holding back from her. She tries to get him to open up to her, but David doesn’t want to inflict her with the horrors of what he’s seen and done.

Meanwhile, Lindsey is dealing with her father Denis, who is an Operation Desert Storm Veteran that suffers from PTSD. So when David comes home and starts showing signs of the same thing Lindsey will have to decide whether or not if she wants to pursue a relationship with David. Or will David sabotage this before it even has a chance to blossom?

Gooseberry Island by Steven Manchester is a love story, but also its a story of a man that has to make peace with demons of his past. A journey of forgiveness of oneself. It’s a novel that shows a real life issue for our men and women that have served our country and their families. The problem in the story lies in the fact that it totally lacks a timeframe. Also, at times the story is very repetitive. With a good developmental editor, this could have rated higher.
