When The Characters Speak #1: It’s Complicated – Portia A. Cosby

So…yeah. This is weird. I hate when people are like, “Tell me a little about yourself,” because I don’t know what their angle is. What do you wanna know? That I’m originally from Gary, Indiana and my favorite color is yellow; or that while attending one of the country’s most prestigious boarding schools, I learned about much more than the Civil War and calculus? I deal in specifics. Portia told me to give you a taste of who I am, but do I give you the bitter, sweet, or sour?

My name is Venita Miles, but if I’m not wearing my COO hat, I go by Venni. You may have already met me in Lesson Learned: It Is What It Is, but in Portia’s upcoming book, you get the chance to know me. I still can’t believe she talked me into this shit. I never planned on letting her tell my story, but she asked me to trust her. Since she introduced me to the man who made me feel again, I figure I owe her one.

So, what do you have a taste for?

Bitter: My father caught me having sex on his couch when I was thirteen and shipped me off to a (co-ed) boarding school. Shortly thereafter, I became pregnant, and he disowned me. He’s dead now, and I don’t care.

Sweet: After resolving that love wasn’t for me, Lawrence proved me wrong. He knows about my lucrative but licentious past, and he loves me anyway. Have you ever heard that song, “Fooled Around and Fell in Love?” Yep. That happened.

Sour: My sister and I have been holding on to a secret kept out of love…and convenience.  It’s been sixteen years. Love isn’t always convenient. I think it’s time to tell the truth.

If I had to sum myself up in one sentence, I’d tell you I’m complicated. When I told Portia this, she smiled and agreed. Guess what the name of my book is.
