Its a joy to be here on my friend Orsayors BIRTHDAY! Would you please sing Happy Birthday to her right now? (You can do it inside your head so no one will think youre crazy if youre say, at Starbucks).
Orsayor has agreed to help me get the word out about a Pre-Order campaign Im running for my upcoming novel SAVAGE DRIFT. Anyone who pre-orders it will receive an Exclusive Bonus short story Ive written thats from the point of view of Max Skolnik, one of the little kids in the MONUMENT 14 series.
To whet your appetite to hear more from Max and get the Exclusive Bonus (do you like how I keep capitalizing that?), heres a SNEAK PREVIEW of SAVAGE DRIFT.
In this scene, Max and the little kids are writing letters to their friend Batiste. Max approaches Dean with a piece of writing paper
Dean, Max says, pushing a piece of paper toward me. Can you concentrate a story for me?
How do you mean, concentrate?
Well, Max begins. This one time I asked my mom to write down a letter to my Uncle Mack who was in the Pen, doing five to ten for salting batteries. I wanted to tell him about how I was sitting out in the car at Emeralds, waiting on my dad because he had some business arrangements to straighten out and I wasnt allowed to go in there anymore on account of all the g-strings.
Anyway I was just sitting there, doing my multiplication tables homework when a cop car glides in, real quiet.
And I see a cop get out walking over to a car thats way over at the end of the parking lot and hes moving real slow and suddenly he opens the door and an actual lady, a mom I actually knew, fell right out on the asphalt. It was my used-to-be best friend Channings mom and she didnt have any pants on!
Sahalia laughed out loud and then buried her face against Alexs shoulder.
It turned out Channings mom was doing lap dances on the side. And thats illegal! So she got arrested into the cop car and the man she was sitting on was too.
Oh boy, said Mrs. McKinley.
Whats a lap dance? Henry asked.
Max, sweetie, Im not sure this story is for little ears, Mrs. McKinley said.
I wanted to tell her that Maxs stories never are, but he held up his hand, holding her off, and barreled on.
So anyways, I wanted to tell all that, about what I saw to my Uncle Mack, because he used to hang around Channings mom a lot and sometimes buy her things like baby diapers and stuff when she ran out. So I told that whole story to my mom and she was supposed to be writing it down and she only wrote one sentence on the paper. And I said to her, Mom, why didnt you write down my story? and she says, I did, hun. I just concentrated it.
What did she write, your mom? asked Henry.
She just wrote, Natalia Fiore got arrested for prostitution.
Huh, I said. And what story did you want me to concentrate?
The story of what happened to us! Max says. So Batiste will remember us.
He tapped the paper, like I should get to work.
I looked at him, his blue eyes sparkling and ready to roll.
You know what, Max? That would take me a really long time to write.
Youre a good writer. It wont take too long.
How do you know Im a good writer?
You better be. You write in your journal everyday! Max exclaimed.
Please head over to my website and get your short story! You need more MAX!
And again, Happy Birthday Orsayor!
The stunningly fierce conclusion to Emmy Laybourne’s Monument 14trilogy.
The survivors of the Monument 14 have finally made it to the safety of a Canadian refugee camp. Dean and Alex are cautiously starting to hope that a happy ending might be possible.
But for Josie, separated from the group and trapped in a brutal prison camp for exposed Type Os, things have gone from bad to worse. Traumatized by her experiences, she has given up all hope of rescue or safety.
Meanwhile, scared by the government’s unusual interest in her pregnancy, Astrid (with her two protectors, Dean and Jake in tow) joins Niko on his desperate quest to be reunited with his lost love Josie.
Author Emmy Laybourne reaches new heights of tension and romance in this action-packed conclusion to the Monument 14 trilogy.
